weekend inspiration

Doesn't this weekend feel like the unofficial start to summer? We're escaping our 80+ degree house (we have no AC!) and heading to my in-laws, where they have a pool. Before I go I wanted to share some fun links:

Madewell's e-commerce site launches!

Romper love, here here and here. I tried a nautical striped one on at Target the other day and loved it, but am still deciding if I can pull off the look.

Below are photos of Kate's Adventure. This story will amaze you. Read her adventure here (but don't skip to the end!).

summer thrift list

A recent trip to Restoration Hardware has inspired me to collect some of these items this summer (at thrift shops, discount stores, yard sales, etc):

vintage yogurt bottles ($29 each at RH)

retro wire baskets ($39-59 ea at RH)

cast metal letters, for bookends ($10-69 ea at RH)

island home

This Italian home, on the island of Filicudi, looks beautiful. The use of pale blue throughout it is so soothing. And, each room has the name of a surrounding island written on the door.

dessert cups

We picked up four of these sorbet cups & spoons on a whim at Crate & Barrel last weekend. They're only $3 and are super tiny, which makes it fun to come up with ideas for what to serve inside them (besides sorbet, of course).

little bee vintage

Little Bee Vintage has a wonderful vintage collection of refined, British clothing & accessories. Browse the shop, here.

PS. Thanks to Cassie for inviting me to guest post as part of her England series yesterday. I included this shop (along with a few other fun things that remind me of England).

lost & kualoa

When we got married and moved into a tiny apartment 3 years ago, we had no internet, no tv stations, and maybe two radio stations that came through. So we found ourselves renting a lot of movies & tv series. The first tv show we chose, since everyone seemed to talk about it, was LOST.

We finished the first 2 seasons literally in days, and have been hooked ever since. Anyone who watches the show knows that it isn't just about all of the crazy stuff that happens on the island - it's also brilliant, compelling storytelling about the lives of all these characters that you become vested in.

When we were in Hawaii we spent an amazing afternoon at Kualoa Ranch where LOST is filmed. We visited a one of the dharma sites, went to Hurley's golf course, and visited a hut that they had just finished filming a scene at. It was us and two other couples being driven around in a short bus, cameras in tow, as we went along on this tour.

Our tour took us through Ka'a'awa Valley that sits between two mountains (which we now recognize on the show). We've since noticed that most of the open land shots are filmed here. It's right along the ocean, and nearby is the pond where the dock shots are filmed, and behind the valley is the rainforest on the show.

a hut in the valley (a scene they had just filmed)

They were still filming while we were there and although we didn't see any of the sets or crew during our tour, it was still an amazing experience. Gave us some great perspective on how they created the look of the island, and made it even more interesting to watch the show.
Oh, LOST, we'll miss you. It's been fun.

weekend inspiration: nautical interiors

I'd like to add a little more nautical flair to the rooms in our house, even if it's just a small striped pillow or vignette of collected objects here or there. Some inspiration:

Saturday we're checking out local yard sales looking for frames and mirrors. I rarely have any luck with it, but I'm going to try my best to drag myself out of bed to arrive early. Hoping your weekend plans are a little more exciting than ours!

table setting & succulents

I was really inspired by the simple (but beautiful) tablescape featured on Sunday Suppers yesterday. The occasion was a fresh vegetarian feast, so they kept the table simple with white plates, green striped napkins, pretty menu cards, and an abundance of potted succulents.

I loved seeing the burro's tail succulent as part of the decor (bottom left). Q's mom gave us one recently and it has become a favorite. It grows quickly, and if any buds fall off they can be planted in another pot to start a new burro's tail (so you could have a whole house full if you'd like..).

kimia & kenny

I cannot stop smiling over Kimia (of Alkeemi) & her fiance's engagement photos, shot entirely on film by the talented Jose Villa. I go back and forth between what I like most - the boat, her nautical dress, the style of the photos, or maybe just how adorable this couple is...

It makes me want to book a session for us with Jose and the nearest field (complete with boat, of course) right away. Thanks, Kimia for letting me share these! See more photos here on her blog.

toast: clothing, home, & travel

I've always admired Toast from online, but didn't realize until last month that I could have free Toast catalogs delivered to my home from the UK. Their catalogs are pretty serious, too - it's basically a small book that will arrive (wrapped) in your post box. I get one for clothing and one for house & home. Here's a peek:

They also have an online journal called Toast Travels, full of ideas, articles, cool photos, & style tips.

butterflies in color

Can't think of a more creative start to the week than to look at these wonderful shadow boxes designed by Krystle. She recycles colorful bits of paper to make artfully arranged butterflies:

Her blog is an awesome source of inspiration, too. I also keep up with her weekly Me, You, Earth Too posts (all about pursuing an eco-conscious, healthy lifestyle).

weekend inspiration: road trip

(1 by maus via passionbird, 2 book here, 3 by me in hawaii)

No traveling for us this weekend, but road trips have just been on my mind lately...have a great weekend!

bamboo nightstands

I've come up with some new ideas for finishing our master bedroom (my inspiration is nature, tropical, safari, travel, nautical). My plans are already driving my husband crazy and I had to make him re-hang sheers above our bed three times. But, we're making progress and after envisioning our nightstands, I came across these photos of bamboo side tables that are just what I had in mind:

Aren't they fun? I love the clean, simple look of the frame, but have no idea where to find them. So we're thinking about making a wood version, and lining the shelves with bamboo place mats
to give it texture (like the nightstand above that has cool textured shelves). Let's hope it works.

cabin 7

Jen from the haystack needle launched her fabulous new shop Cabin 7 yesterday, and the products are beautiful (gilded objects, including wooden block letters & cardholders). So is the photoshoot Jen styled using Cabin 7 goods for a party she hosted. I totally want to plan parties with her now.

stamped party napkins & gilded letter blocks

PS. I think the gilded vintage blocks would make a sweet addition to our collection of Q & A letters (our initials).

gingham & pale blue

I love these cute photos by Annabel of blushing ambition. I'm always a fan of trench coats and gingham (together they are even better).

gifts for mom

On Sunday we drove up to visit our moms for mother's day and went out to lunch together (my brother was in town from grad school, too). We also brought along a bottle of homemade lemonade for each mom (it's the recipe I posted here). We used Ikea's awesome glass bottles and added little tags & flowers...oh so fun.

(We even remembered to take a few photos, which we usually forget!)

weekend inspiration: studio & fun things

Today I'm sharing a peek at my studio over on Oh Hello Friend. See more on
Danni's awesome blog! Here is some fun inspiration for the weekend:
