our house: the living room
My sweet husband got me one of the best gifts for Christmas: the Photo 101 book. I've always wanted to take pictures of our first house and document the changes we make along the way, but I'd get frustrated because our house doesn't get very much natural light.
My pictures were either too dark to see, or too overexposed because I'd use the wrong manual settings. This book, which I read all in one night (and then woke up the next day and practiced a ton), should come with every camera. It teaches you how to get the correct exposure for every shot, and get light-filled pictures. It will make you want to photograph everything.
So, now that we've taken down all of our Christmas things, here is part one of our house: the living room! We've rearranged it a million times because the layout is tricky and I'm the most indecisive person ever. But here it is, with a furniture arrangement I finally like, ready to be personalized. I'm thinking: more plants, more pictures, more pillows. And maybe paint?

so simple, cute and BRIGHT :) i love it
So lovely, Alli! I have almost enough saved to purchase a DSLR camera and I promised myself that when I do, I'm buying this book as well.
I need that book lol I'll have to look into it :)
And your living are looks great (good job on the photos btw) I use my little coffee tables?? that way too.
Hope to see more of your home now that you got the skills lol
its fantastic and I must say your photos look great too! May I ask what camera you used?
I need that book! I just got a new camera for Christmas and reading the manual is the last thing I want to do. A simple how-to book like this would be perfection....I am heading to Amazon right now :).
I think a bit of paint would be good. Or some rbight pillows to add a splash of color. Or just keep it as it is - it looks fab!
Alli, it is so beautiful and fresh!
Thanks for the book recomendation too!
love your space! love the hardwood floors- jealous! and i need to check into the book. thought about buying it but wasn't sure if i would learn anything- meaning it would be too hard for me to understand : ) thanks for the thumbs up!
Personally, I'm thinking, "MORE KITTIES!" because your cat is adorable!
I think plants are *always* a good addition because they're good for your air and your mental health. Plus, you can get plants that tie in with your level of green (or brown, as it were) thumb!
I have those same tables in green in my bedroom. :o)
The room is clean and simple, but very cute. I like the way that your arranged your domino book and magazines vertically like that.
Can't wait to see more pictures from around the house as you work through the book.
sounds like a book i need!
Very simple and chic!
What a sweet husband! I've always secretly wanted to see your house and it looks even better than I pictured! Now I want to get that book!
Sounds like my kind of book for my year of trying to pick up the camera more - thank you for the recommendation.
xx
I just bought the book! It sounds exactly like what I've been looking for -- a good, quick, but applicable read that will get me off of manual settings! Thanks!
Thanks for the book rec Alli! My new DSLR Canon just arrived a few days ago, so I am in need of all the help I can get. Oh! And I see that you have the Creative Inc. book - I got that for Christmas from my mama! :) I'm excited to see what you do to your room.
Alli! Love the photos. I love your simple style.
My hubby and I just invested in a set of those wall box/shelf thingys for our dining room. And here's my problem: as a somewhat short person, I feel like he placed them a little too high. Though I really like your arrangement over the couch, I feel the same proportion issue when I look at your photo. Did Q place them there to avoid hitting them when he's sitting on the couch? Did you have the same discussion with your hubby that I did mine? Do you plan to put more frames beneath the ones you already have?
He's over 6'4", I'm 5'4", so where is the happy medium for wall hangings?
Would love to know how you handle those things. :)
Thank you everyone for your sweet comments!
Bethany: We actually hung them that high so that our cat Bailey can't "reach" them from the couch! Ha. She'd try to knock stuff off or pull the shelf down somehow. But I plan to add more frames below at some point.
I do have the same issue as you though - Q is taller + tends to hang things too high for me. Sounds like a serious issue here for us shorter wives :) I say just above eye level for the shorter person is a good compromise.
I definitely need that book in my life! Your house looks so neat and calm, I could just curl up on that fluffy rug for a serene moment!
Looks fantastic - your place always looks so bright and sunny! I love it.
i love it!!!
What a great book - I think I need to check it out and get some photography tips myself. I'm in 'living room decorating' mode at the moment too - trying to 'finish it off' and make it practical and liveable for us all at the same time. Yours looks nice and light - perfect for a few pot plants.
i think your living room looks oh so charming and sweet. the kind of living room i would not mind just lounging in all day long with good friends or a kitty like you have. good luck with your new photo book. ohh and i really like the piece of furniture you have your books on and a giraffe. have a sweet weekend.
so much fun! i love the simplicity, Alli. just beautiful!
you have fantastic natural light from those windows! i love the white palette too, it looks great!
your house is so lovely!! xo joanna
such a cute living room! love the shelves about the sofa and your array of pretty books! so, the photo 101 was helpful? i might have to check that out! i take horrid photos!

heather
Your place looks so cozy, dear! And you did such a good job with the photos - wow!
I absolutely love the white cabinet! And the two tables are quite smart! I could use something like that - one for my laptop and the other one for whatever I need :)
I love your style and I've enjoyed reading your blog!
I really think you've missed a big opportunity for color here, just a pop through the pillows or wall art could really make a huge impact.
Hi There,
I wish Google Alerts had told me about your sweet post earlier! Thank you for your nice comments about my book. Can I use your testimonial on my site?
